My fifth grade homework

I didn't know I would be assigned homework for my son's 5th grade class. I forgot about it and Josh reminded me yesterday. I wrote notes last night and then wrote it up today. I thought I would share it here. This way it will end up in my journal, when I get this thing printed off. :)

Joshua Mark Oswald

Josh’s name comes from the Bible. We wanted him to be “strong and of good courage”(Joshua 1:9) and to choose to “serve the Lord” (24:15). Mark comes from his uncle. His Dad’s older brother. Oswald comes from Germany. His great, great, great grandfather was a stone mason who came to America and built bridges and houses everywhere he lived.

Josh is a son, a brother, a cousin, a nephew, and a grandson. Family is very important to us. We travel to Idaho and/or Utah for family reunions nearly every summer. Water usually plays a part in our summer activities. He likes to swim and ride water slides. He likes to challenge his cousins on the Wii. He is a Wii champion and a DS master. He likes the barbecues and dinners. He likes to watch movies and hang out. He likes the trampolines and games.

Josh is a student. He is a reader and a math wiz. This summer he and his mother read all five books in the Fablehaven series. His mother loves that Josh likes to read Fantasy books just as much as she does. His dad likes that Josh likes math. His dad is an accountant. Josh likes history. He watches historical documentaries. He likes science. He likes to learn about animals and the oceans. He watches those kind of documentaries too. When we go to the beach, we look at tide pools and try and find all the animals we can. He likes to learn about other people. He likes to learn about Greek and Roman mythologies.

Josh is a church member, a cub scout, a friend and a piano player. In church, Josh does church things like learning about the Bible, but he also learns how to give talks in front of people and how to memorize things. Josh’s good friends are in cub scouts too. Sometimes they do fun things, like ride their bikes and play chess and go to camp. Sometimes they do not so fun things, like listen to classical music and write stories and keep a diary for a week. Josh is a piano player because his mom tells him he has to be. His teacher says he is a good sight reader. His mom and dad like to listen to him practice.

Josh is a budding artist. He helped his mom design an ocean quilt. He wanted a blue ocean, a blue dolphin, a red octopus and red crabs. The red crabs became orange and the ocean quilt hangs in the office instead being on his bed. Josh is learning how to draw. He draws a lot of swords and soldiers and knights. He remembers things from the books he reads and likes to draw the weapons and the characters.

Josh likes to build things. He has lots of legos. He and his brother build with the legos. He and his friends build with the legos. He likes build castles at the beach. He likes to build mountains and then dig a tunnel underneath it. When Josh grows up he wants to build things and invent things.

Josh is an eater of his dad’s cookies and his mom’s brownies and pies. He is almost as tall as his mother. His mother is sure he will grow to be taller than his dad. He is loved. He is a protector. He is funny and clever. He is smart. He is kind. He is good.
